HEXSAT
About
As part of my HNC, I developed a prototype for a simple satellite with a 1.5 W RF transceiver operating at 434 MHZ that conforms to the PocketQube standard. I designed the frame from PCBs which slot together to provide a stiff but lightweight structure. The radio transceiver was based on an open-source design (OpenLST) with extensive modifications to the schematic and source code. Using an SDR base station, I was able to achieve half-duplex communication with the satellite while running off its own battery power.
